Ultra-Small Solid State Drive (SSD)

Intel´s latest SSD, the Intel® Z-P140 PATA, has the size of a thumbnail and weighs with 0.6 g less than a drop of water. This ultra-small, low-power storage solution uses a parallel-ATA (PATA) interface and offers the right size, capacity and performance for handheld mobile devices and embedded applications.

Z-P140

The Intel® Z-P140 is the smallest solid state drive in its class, making it attractive to designers and manufacturers of mobile and ultra-mobile devices. Comparatively, the Intel® Z-P140 is 400 times smaller in volume than a 1.8 inch hard disk drive (HDD), and at 0.6 g is 75 times lighter.

No moving Parts
Mechanical latencies in moving-head drives continue to hinder many operations. Locating boot code, operating systems and commonly accessed libraries on a high-speed, high-density PATA solid state drive instead of a conventional hard disk drive significantly improves random file access speed.

With Intel´s unique NAND Flash Memory features, the Intel® Z-P140 moves data at a read rate of 40 MB per second and a write rate of 30 MB per second. A mean time between failures (MTBF) rate of 2.5 million hours delivers the reliability and durability customers need for real-world applications. Without moving parts or refresh demands, the Z-P140 typically requires only 300 mW of power to read data (sleep mode: 1.1 mW), extending battery life beyond that of standard HDDs.

High Flexibility
Available in densities of 2 to 16 GB, the new solid state drive provides the flexibility needed for a wide array of mobile applications. Photos, music, application code or even an entire operating system can be stored on the SSD. Most chipsets and system platforms already support PATA (IDE). That is why Intel® uses an embedded PATA interface in the Z-P140 – a solid state drive with a known, proven interface eliminates complex or proprietary technologies that delay development, and speeds design and time-to-market of improved or new end products.
