Flexis™ Microcontrollers with USB Options

Freescale is expanding its Flexis™ series of microcontrollers: The Flexis™ JM family provides compatible 8- and 32-bit MCUs that offer a rich set of features as well as flexible USB options for serial communications in industrial and consumer applications.

The Flexis™ series is the connection point of S08 and Cold-Fire® V1 microcontrollers on the Freescale Controller Continuum. The Controller Continuum outlines a roadmap that provides pin-for-pin compatible 8-bit and 32-bit MCUs that share a common set of peripherals and development tools.
By using the Flexis™ series of microcontrollers, developers can offer multiple configurations and performance levels of their products with a single hardware and board design. Furthermore, software re-investment and design cycle time is drastically reduced with peripheral and tool compatibility.

MC9S08JM: 8-Bit MCUs with USB Device Controller
The 8-bit microcontrollers of the MC9S08JM family feature a full speed USB device controller providing a quick and easy way to standardize serial communications in industrial and consumer applications. The family supports up to 60 Kbytes of Flash memory, with up to 4 Kbytes of RAM, and is supported in LQFP32, LQFP44, QFN44, QFP64 and LQFP64 package options.

MCF51JM: 32-Bit MCUs with USB OTG
Featuring USB OTG (On-The-Go), the 32-bit microcontrollers of the MCF51JM family offer flexible control and connectivity options, including USB host or USB device operation. The MCF51JM family starts at 64 and goes up to 128 Kbytes of Flash memory, with up to 16 Kbytes of RAM, and is supported in LQFP80, LQFP64, QFP64 and LQFP44 package options. These microcontrollers offer an advanced feature set including a rich suite of communications peripherals (2x SCI, 2x SPI, I²C), a 12-bit A/D converter, an analog comparator, two independent timer modules and a real time clock. In addition to this base feature set, the 32-bit MCF51JM128 offers a Cryptographic Acceleration Unit, and a CAN module, both of which are increasingly used in a variety of industrial applications.

All JM microcontrollers feature an integrated transceiver that helps designers save money, time and board space by eliminating external components. Freescale offers a stand alone, complimentary, easy-to-use USB stack that enables customers to get their USB application running in minutes. This stack is also available for all USB MCUs in the Controller Continuum.

Low-Cost Demoboard
The Background debugging system and on-chip in-circuit emulation (ICE) provide a single wire interface that eliminates the need for expensive emulation tools. Development with the Flexis™ JM series microcontrollers is extremely simple with a low-cost demoboard (DEMOJMSKT) and the common CodeWarrior™ development tool suite supporting both the S08 and Coldfire® MCUs.
