Glass-encapsulated NTC Sensors
Temperature Stability of up to 300 °C
In the field of temperature measurement,
there is a growing need for NTC sensors
with faster response time, more compact
dimensions and higher temperature stability.
EPCOS offers a wide range of NTC
devices with and without insulation.
The glass-encapsulated NTC temperature
sensors from EPCOS are distinguished by their
compact dimensions and very fast response
times. The B57540G103F000 device with a
head diameter of 0.9 mm max., for example,
is suitable for extremely tight mounting
spaces. Thanks to its low mass, it responds
very quickly to temperature changes and ensures
an accurate measurement even when
these changes are very rapid. Another advantage
of these glass-encapsulated NTC
sensors is their high long-term stability.
The high temperature stability of up to 300 °C
allows temperature measurement in situations
beyond the capability of other technologies.
The broad range of resistance values
from 2 kÙ up to 1.4MÙ and tolerances beginning
at ±0.1 K as well as the availability of
several series in various dimensions and wire
sizes allow customers to select the optimum
NTC sensor for their requirements.
Innovation – Insulated Glass NTC Sensors
EPCOS recently began offering glass-encapsulated
NTCs sensors with flexible electrical
insulation (G541, G551 and G561 series). In
addition to the advantages of the glassencapsulated
NTC sensors already available
for some time, these innovative devices offer
an insulation of 500 VDC/1s in NaCl.
This guaranteed electrical strength eliminates
the need for additional insulation, e.g. with
Teflon tubes, thus simplifying manufacturing
processes. This significantly reduces processing
costs while also allowing solutions for very
narrow spaces, such as in metal tube sensors.
Typical Applications
Glass-encapsulated NTC sensors are particularly
well suited for applications in domestic
appliances such as espresso makers, toasters,
dryers and washing machines. Here, they help
enhance comfort and save energy. Other applications include:

Automotive electronics (engine management) |

Office equipment (e.g. drum temperature
monitoring in copying machines) |
Sensors with tight Tolerances for Medical Applications
Temperature measurement in medical applications
requires very fast response times and
high accuracy, especially in the range of the
the body temperature (37 °C). EPCOS has developed
a series of especially designed insulated
glass-encapsulated NTC temperature
sensors in various sizes with a tolerance of
±0.1 K between 25 °C and 45 °C. Besides their
high measurement accuracy, compact size
(B57542G3103F000: head diameter of 1.4mm
max.) and fast response times, their maximum
operating temperature of 150 °C permits
a reliable sterilization for clinical use.
