New 1 W Light-Emitting Diodes in a SMD Power Package

Vishay released a new family of yellow, red, amber, warm white and white 1 W light-emitting diodes. The Little-Star^® LED series VLMx71 offer a low thermal resistance and high luminous intensity for a wide range of applications.

Featuring a SMD power package with a compact 6.0 mm by 6.0 mm footprint and ultra-low profile of 1.5 mm, the new Little Star^® LEDs VLMx71xxxx are among the most robust and light-efficient products on the market. The devices are designed for high current drive, and offer a low thermal resistance (18 and 20 K/W), high luminous intensity (7,150 to 22,400 mcd) and high luminous flux (21,000 to 70,000 mlm).

The Little Star^® LEDs are optimized for backlighting and illumination in automotive and transport, consumer and general applications. Typical end products include handheld mobile devices, such as mobile phones and PDAs, traffic lights, advertising displays, household appliances and exterior automotive lighting, such as turn and brake lights. Additionally, the white LEDs are ideal for general illumination purposes as an alternative to incandescent lamps.

All LEDs in the new family offer a 60° half-intensity angle and 120° viewing angle, and are compatible with IR-reflow solder processes. The LEDs are automotive qualified to AEC-Q101 and comply with RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC. Preconditioned according to JEDEC moisture sensitivity Level 2 standards, the Little Star^® package is lead-free and RoHS-compliant.

Apart from the Little Star^® family mentioned above, Vishay also offers a wide choice of other LEDs, including LEDs in the CLCC-6 flat ceramic package and tri-color LEDs.

LEDs in the CLCC-6 Package
Housed in an ultra-low profile CLCC-6 ceramic package measuring only 0.9 mm in height, the VLMK62, VLMY62 and VLMW62 SMD LEDs combine a low thermal resistance of 40 K/W or 60 K/W and high optical power from 2,800 to 9,000 mcd. They are ideal for thermal-sensitive applications and feature a high service life of up to 50,000 hours.

Tri-Color LEDs
The VLMRGB343.. multi-SMD tri-color LED is a high-brightness device that provides separate control of the red, green, and blue LED chips, and offers a luminous intensity range of up to 285 mcd for red, 560 mcd for green and 200 mcd for blue. Featuring a black surface and compatibility for all video standards, the device comes in a PLCC-4 package with a compact 3.2 mm by 2.8 mm footprint and a low 1.8 mm profile for board space savings.
