Very Competitive Prices and Improved Thermal Performance
SOT78D, an internally insulated TO220AB
package, is a new addition to NXP´s
package portfolio. The new package
offers several advantages, including a
lower thermal resistance, over the
SOT186A utilizing external isolation.
The initial products available in SOT78D
are very competitive 3-quadrant triacs
rated at 12 and 16 A.
Some applications require their triacs to be
electrically isolated from their heatsink. This
may be for safety reasons or to isolate triacs
from each other where more than one is
mounted to a common heatsink or chassis.
Triacs in isolated packages are devices of
choice for these cases.
SOT78D versus SOT186A
The easiest and most cost-effective method
of obtaining reliable electrical isolation is to
use an isolated package. Package isolation
can be achieved in different ways: externally,
as for the all-plastic SOT186A package,
or internally, as for the SOT78D.
The advantages of the SOT78D package over
SOT186A are:
| > |
Externally indistinguishable from standard
TO220AB (SOT78), so it offers the
same ease of handling and assembly |
| > |
May be spring-clip, screw or rivet
mounted to the heatsink (riveting is forbidden
with SOT186A because of the risk
of cracking the plastic insulation) |
| > |
Less risk of damage to the package by
rough handling and or mechanical stress
during assembly |
| > |
Lower junction-to-heatsink thermal
resistance Rth(j-h); this promotes cooler
junction temperature/better heat dissipation
in high power applications |
The table compares the junction-to-heatsink
thermal resistances of identical triacs
with different isolated mounting arrangements.
The SOT78D package yields the best
thermal performance, with Rth(j-h) = 2.8 K/W
Triacs in SOT78D
The initial launch products to be released in
the SOT78D package are High Commutation
(Hi-Com) 3-quadrant triacs rated at 12 A
and 16 A. Devices in SOT78D have a ‘Y’
package identifier – e.g. BTA312Y-600C,
BTA416Y-800B, etc. Electrical isolation,
high thermal performance, ease of handling
and assembly, and very competitive prices
make these triacs ideal for use in power applications
such as vacuum cleaners, lamp
dimmers and power tools.
