Extremely Small Synchronous Buck Regulator

FAN2106 Saves Board Space and Delivers up to 6 A Output Current

Fairchild introduced the FAN2106, the first product in a new family of TinyBuck™ DC/DC buck regulators that integrate an advanced analog IC, MOSFETs and a bootstrap diode into an ultra-compact moulded leadless package (MLP).

Measuring only 5 x 6 mm, this highly integrated synchronous buck regulator consumes approximately 50 % less board space than discrete solutions and facilitates greater design flexibility.

Input Range of 3 to 24 V
Furthermore, the FAN2106 achieves up to 95 % power efficiency by converting 3 to 24 V input voltages to output voltages as low as 0.8 V while delivering up to 6 A output current. This compact, easy-to-use regulator is ideal for use in a wide range of POL (point-of-load) applications, including settop boxes, cable modems, in-cabin GPSs, portable medical equipment, LED lighting, industrial instrumentation as well as ultramobile PCs, notebooks and blade servers.

Programmable Switching Frequency, 600 kHz max.
For loads between 1 A and 6 A, the operating efficiency of the FAN2106 generally ranges between 85 and 95 %, and lower switching frequencies tend to increase the operating efficiency of the device. In certain cases (for example, when the input voltage is 8 V, the output voltage is set to 3.3 V, and the switching frequency is 300 kHz) efficiency can rise slightly above 95 %. The maximum supported switching frequency is 600 kHz.

Application

Due to its wide input-voltage range and reduced requirement for external components, the highly integrated module also has the potential to simplify intermediate-bus-architecture (IBA) systems.
