PCA967x Family Supports the Fast-mode Plus (Fm+) Protocol
Designed for the Fast-mode Plus version
of the I²C-bus, the PCA967x GPIO expanders
from NXP provide faster control
of slave devices and enable a higher
drive capability. They are backward
compatible with the Fast-mode and
standard I²C-bus protocols, and are ideal
for use in applications such as LED control,
servers, industrial control, medical
equipment and cellular phones.
The PCA967x family expands NXP’s portfolio
of GPIO for the I²C-bus and includes
the first remote I/O expanders that support
the Fast-mode Plus (Fm+) protocol, and can
be used as drop-in upgrades to PCF8574
and PCF8575 I/O expander devices.
Significant improvements
The PCA967x family offers significant improvements
compared with previous generations
of I²C-bus GPIO, e.g. higher bus
speeds (1 MHz instead of 400 kHz) and
higher SDA drive capability (30 mA instead
of 3 mA). Due to the high maximum bus
speed, these expanders can use software
PWM to dim LEDs, and can accommodate
more devices on the same bus without
buffers. The 8-bit and 16-bit I/O expanders
consume very little current and include
latched outputs, capable of driving up to
25 mA of current that can control an LED
directly.
Other features include:
