With immediate effect, Taiwan Semiconductor
offers all of its products with
"Green Compound" on request. Green
Compound stands for molding compounds
that are free of bromine and
antimony trioxide (Br and Sb2O3 respectively).
Harmonizing economy and ecology – this is
a goal which is now widely shared throughout
politics and economy. However in terms
of the strictest laws of environmental protection
or combining previously prepared
general agreements and individual initiatives
to find the “better” way to go about
things, this still remains contested (one
thinks here too back to the discussions that
took place ahead of RoHS implementation).
In terms of the company taking this individiual
initiative or voluntary environmental
protection measure, as it were,
Taiwan Semiconductor is setting a good
example: Called EME-E110 and EME-120
the company has introduced two molding
compounds, which contain neither BR nor
Sb2O3.
Along with mercury, bromine is the only element
which is liquid at room temperature
under normal pressure. It is very toxic and its
fumes should not be inhaled. Bromine is also
corrosive and should on no account come
into contact with the skin. Antimony trioxide,
a white crystalline powder, is soluable in
concentrated acid and alkali (but not in
water!) and is also harmful to health.
Taiwan Semiconductor calls this bromine
and antimony trioxide-free molding compound
“Green Compound” and the company
offers all its products with it on request. Part
numbers remain the same, but the packing
code has an additional “G” at the end, e.g.
“ROG” instead of “RO”.
