Industry’s First Compatible 8- and 32-Bit MCUs
Embedded application developers are often facing problems when it comes to the transition between 8-bit and 32-bit MCUs. Freescale´s new Flexis™ series microcontrollers break the traditional 8-/32-bit boundaries – the MC9S08QE128 and the MCF51QE128 are not only pin-for-pin compatible but also share a common set of peripherals and development tools to provide a simple, cost-effective migration.
The Flexis™ series is the connection point of S08 and ColdFire V1 microcontrollers on the Freescale Controller Continuum. The Controller Continuum outlines a roadmap that provides pin-for-pin compatible 8-bit and 32-bit MCUs that share a common set of peripherals and development tools.
By using the new Flexis series of microcontrollers, developers can now offer multiple configurations and performance levels of their products with a single hardware and board design. Furthermore, software reinvestment and design cycle time is drastically reduced with peripheral and tool compatibility.
Optimized Architeture
Through an optimized architecture that provides lower operating voltage and lower operating current, the QE128 microcontrollers offer ultra-low power capabilities to extend battery lifein mobile devices. A combination of low power and high performance offers unique flexibility to turn peripheral clocks on and off to consume only the current that is actually needed for particular resources or tasks, respectively.

The Background debugging system and on-chip in-circuit emulation (ICE) provide a single wire interface that eliminates the need for expensive emulation tools. Development with the Flexis™ series microcontrollers is extremely simple with a low-cost demoboard (DEMOQE128) and the common CodeWarrior development tool suite supporting both the S08 and Coldfire MCUs.
